Dr. Nawiri is an analytical chemist focusing on nutrition-related illnesses. She has investigated levels of serum beta-carotene, retinol and hemoglobin in indigenous plants and is most interested in their impact on malnutrition. Currently she is developing food formulations for vulnerable groups and the use of nutrition in the management of illnesses including HIV, AIDS, cancer and vitamin A deficiency. Dr. Nawiri received her PhD in Chemistry from Kenyatta University with a research fellowship at Siegen University in Germany. She has served as a training consultant for the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services and as a curriculum development expert for the Kimathi University College of Technology. She has been awarded research grants from Sigma Xi and Bioversity Interntional among others and is a member of the Kenya Chemical Society.
