Meet the Department
The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Ibadan is based at University College Hospital, one of the country’s major centers for cancer research and training. The department teaches courses in oncology and molecular genetics to undergraduate medical students and provides more extensive training to graduate students. The University of Ibadan is the oldest university in Nigeria.
Pursuing Personalized Cancer Treatment: Dr. Atara Ntekim
Dr. Atara Ntekim is a lecturer in radiation oncology at the University of Ibadan. He focuses his research on clinical oncology and cancer genomics, working to understand how ethnic variations impact a patient’s response to cancer treatment.
Dr. Ntekim is using molecular biology techniques to uncover biomarkers that will predict a patient’s likelihood to respond to specific therapies for breast, prostate, and colon cancer.
“More equipment in the department will greatly enhance our research and training activities,” he says. “We will be able to have effective international collaborative studies that will facilitate the discovery of cancer treatment agents. We will also be able to attract reputable visiting researchers to conduct research and train our researchers locally with lower cost.”
