As part of our commitment to building capacity for the long run, the Seeding Labs metrics and evaluation team continually works to connect with our Instrumental Access awardees. Often, the impact of a shipment is truly felt years later, and it is always eye-opening to see the kinds of research, workforce training, and institution-building that follow an Instrumental Access award.
Because we fill this unique gap, we can see just how important long-term successes can be for institutions across the globe.
In our latest report on our awardees, we found that Instrumental Access program continues to provide a significant boost to scientific infrastructure in developing countries for years.
Since 2003, 154 Instrumental Access shipments have been sent to researchers across the world. Over the years, a subset of awardees provided us with updates on the progress of their research activities since equipment arrived on campus.
With these most recent updates accounted for, we are proud to share how Instrumental Access departments are accelerating the pace of research at their institutions, publishing on topics from drug discovery to the impact of microplastics on local waterways.
By the numbers
Because Instrumental Access shipments are fulfilled to meet each department’s needs at scale, the equipment has as many impacts as there are departments. It makes Seeding Labs unique in our little corner of the world: we build capacity for particular departments based solely on their priorities.
From improved collaborations with colleagues to establishing new academic programs, this investment in scientific infrastructure is paying dividends at each institution.
In our most recent survey, we learned:
- 77% of awardees report that Instrumental Access equipment has enabled them and their colleagues to engage in new research methods
- 81% of respondents say Instrumental Access equipment has improved the reputation of their department
- 73% of respondents say Instrumental Access equipment has advanced research projects that they now expect to publish
- 88% of respondents reported Instrumental Access has increased student access to modern equipment
We would like to thank the Instrumental Access awardees who responded to the annual survey and shared their research projects and findings.
Join us as we build capacity for the future
Do you have excess equipment in your lab? A donation to Seeding Labs ensures that it will be put to new use building capacity for science in developing countries. The research projects our awardees push forward every day are being done on equipment that was once considered “excess.”
Please visit our equipment donation page to learn how to get started. If you are an Instrumental Access awardee, please continue to update us on your research findings so we can share them with the world!
